So how exactly does an Ivy League online course work?
An online course offers greater flexibility and accessibility for students who can’t put their lives on hold while pursuing their academic dreams. Both advantages are built into the infrastructure of Penn LPS Online curriculum by the School of Arts and Sciences Online Learning Team, who design, produce, and support the courses available through Penn LPS Online.
In this series of feature articles, we take you behind the scenes on the online course development process—from the instructional designers who collaborate with Penn faculty to plan the online courses, to the media producers who add film, animation, and music to bring courses to life, and finally to the technology and operations staff who keep courses running smoothly once they are launched.

March 11 – Spring 1 courses end
March 16 – Spring 2 courses begin
March 23 – Summer course registration opens
April 1 – Deadline for new BAAS students to apply for a summer start
May 1 – Deadline for Gateway students planning for a summer start
May 5 – Deadline for new certificate students to enroll for a summer start
May 8 – Spring 2 classes end
May 17 – Graduation ceremony for BAAS graduates

Course Spotlight
GLBS 3000: Global Public Health: Climate Change and Public Policy
- 8-week course, offered in spring 2
- May be taken as an individual course
- May be applied to the Certificate in Climate Change and Certificate in Global and Regional Studies
- May be applied to the BAAS concentration in Individualized Studies
Through real-world case studies and introductory data analysis, this interdisciplinary course explores the global intersection of climate change, environmental degradation, and public health.
