Matt Johnson has been a lecturer in the Penn Marks Family Center for Excellence in Writing for over 10 years. Matt initially came to Penn for his doctoral work in anthropology has a focus on Mesopotamian empires. In addition to publishing academic articles and book reviews, Matt also has extensive grant-writing experience and received NSF and White-Levy research grants for projects in the Middle East and Europe. Prior to his graduate work, Matt was employed as an archaeologist by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODoT), where he was responsible for writing white papers, site reports, project assessments, impact evaluations, and other genres for professional audiences. Outside of his current work as a lecturer in the Professional Writing program, he continues to tutor and coach writers, including graduate students, veterans, and students with disabilities.
