Andrew Arenge is the director of operations for the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies and oversees the Penn LPS Online program’s Certificate in Data Analytics. He is also an instructor for the Penn LPS Online course Intermediate Data Analytics.
In a recent Penn Today article, Andrew discusses the digital targeting dashboards he has created for the Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns. The dashboards are collections of campaign ads targeted at sub-geographies, what issues the ads cover, and how much each campaign is spending on the ads. End users can search a geographic area to see what the target topics are for that state, county, city, or zip code, and even watch some of the ads.
Through his analysis, Andrew has noticed early shifts and trends in the political and campaigning landscape, like North Carolina’s recent pivot from a red state to a purple state. His research also illustrates how social media platforms and digital ads offer campaigns the ability to geotarget smaller areas with more specific messages than traditional TV advertising allows.
