Carol Muller is a Professor of Music who has published widely on South African music, including Musical Echoes: South African Women Thinking in Jazz (2011) with Sathima Bea Benjamin, Shembe Hymns (2010), Focus: South African Music (2008), and Rituals of Fertility and the Sacrifice of Desire: Nazarite Women’s Performance in South Africa (1999). Muller has also published on South African jazz, religious performance, traditional and popular musics in a variety of journals that represent her interdisciplinary interests, such as the relationship between music, gender, and religious studies, migration and diaspora studies, and critical ethnography. Muller partnered with the Netter Center for Community Partnerships on West Philadelphia Music, which showcases student research about music in communities near Penn. Muller has been teaching online courses since 2003, from the annually offered World Musics and Cultures course to the massive open online course Listening to World Music. She is a seasoned gumboot dancer.
